Budapest at night: an hour-by-hour plan
Start at 6pm, finish at 4am. This is a timed plan for one night in Budapest's District VII — what to do in each hour, how long it takes, and the opening and closing times that decide whether it works.
This is a timetable, not a shortlist. Which bars are best is the venue-by-venue clubbing guide's job; what kind of place District VII is belongs to the district itself. All this page does is put the night in order — what to be doing at each hour, how long it takes, and which doors are actually open when you arrive. Every opening and closing time below was read off the venues' own published hours on 5 August 2026.
The night at a glance
- 6:00 PM — Eat, in the district, while its kitchens are still open. ~90 min.
- 8:00 PM — First drink at Szimpla Kert, Kazinczy u. 14. ~1 hour.
- 9:30 PM — Two streets across to a courtyard bar on Klauzál utca. ~1.5 hours.
- 11:00 PM — Doboz, Klauzál u. 10 — Wednesday to Saturday only. ~1.5 hours.
- 12:30 AM — Gozsdu Udvar, the passage of bars and courtyards. ~1 hour Thursday to Sunday; ~30 minutes Monday to Wednesday.
- 2:00 AM — Onto a club floor. ~2 hours.
- 4:00 AM — Most bar-format venues shut. Home, or the rooms that run to 6am.
This sequence is ours and illustrative. It is a night you can walk yourself, and it is deliberately not the route our guided crawl takes.
6:00 PM — Eat first, because the kitchens close long before the bars do
Mazel Tov, Akácfa u. 47, stops at 11pm Sunday to Thursday and midnight on Friday and Saturday. Instant-Fogas, a few doors along the same street, runs to 6am. That seven-hour spread between two venues on one street is the fact that sets the shape of the whole night: in this district, food is a 6pm decision, not a 1am one. Give it ninety minutes and you will not have to think about it again. The full arithmetic of drinks, doors and the taxi home is what a night out costs.
8:00 PM — First drink at Szimpla Kert, while the courtyard is still a room you can cross
Szimpla Kert opens at 3pm every day — noon on Saturday, 9am on Sunday — and closes at 4am. Arriving at eight means it has been open five hours and has eight left, so an early visit costs you nothing at the far end of the night. It is the original ruin bar, and the one stop here that earns a full hour on its own rather than a drink and a move.
9:30 PM — Two streets across to Klauzál utca
Füge Udvar, Klauzál u. 19, opens at 4pm and runs to 5am — a full hour past Szimpla's last call, which is why it sits in the middle of the plan rather than at the start. Every stop on this page is inside a few blocks of District VII, so the moves between them are minutes rather than journeys. 11:00 PM — Doboz, but only Wednesday to Saturday
Doboz, Klauzál u. 10, opens 6pm to 6am Wednesday through Saturday and does not open at all on Sunday, Monday or Tuesday. Any guide listing it as a nightly stop is wrong three nights out of seven. If you are out early in the week, hold at Füge Udvar and push the rest of the plan forward by about ninety minutes.
Eleven is also the hour where the door starts costing you time rather than money. A guided group walks past the queue at every venue on its route, the club at the end included, and gets a welcome drink in every bar rather than only the first — so if you would rather not spend the back half of the night standing on a pavement, join a guided pub crawl instead of running this plan yourself.
12:30 AM — Gozsdu Udvar, but check the day first
The passage runs between Király u. 13 and Dob u. 16 and holds a row of bars across several linked buildings and their courtyards. It is covered in parts and open to the sky in others, so treat it as a partial answer to rain rather than a complete one. What it is reliably good for is regrouping when a group has spread itself across three venues.
How much of an hour it gives you depends on the day. From Thursday to Sunday a room inside runs to 4am and the block holds comfortably. On Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday the only two rooms still serving at half past midnight both shut at 1am — so that is a thirty-minute stop, not an hour, and you should plan to move on rather than settle in. 2:00 AM — Onto a club floor
Instant-Fogas, Akácfa u. 51, opens at 6pm and closes at 6am, seven nights a week — one of only two stops on this plan still open at five in the morning. Two o'clock is where the night stops being a sequence of bars and becomes a single room you stay in. Budget two hours before the next decision.
4:00 AM — The plan has two endings
Szimpla Kert shuts at 4am. Füge Udvar goes to 5am, Instant-Fogas and Doboz to 6am. So four o'clock is a decision rather than a closing time: leave, or move to the two rooms that outlast it.
Getting back matters more at this hour than at any other. Tram line 6 runs 24 hours a day along the Grand Boulevard, which forms the eastern edge of everything above. Budapest's night bus network was rebuilt on the night of 1–2 July 2026 and a number of routes changed, so line numbers printed in older guides are no longer reliable — plan the trip in the BudapestGO app rather than from a blog post. A single ticket bought on board a night bus costs 700 HUF. Both checked with BKK on 5 August 2026.
Does this plan work tonight?
Three things move it. Doboz is shut Sunday to Tuesday and Gozsdu Udvar thins out sharply Monday to Wednesday, which means Monday and Tuesday lose both the 11pm and the 12:30 blocks — on those two nights, hold longer at Füge Udvar and go straight to the 2am club floor. The hours quoted above are the venues' regular published hours and do not shift with the season — what changes is how much of each venue is usable, because several of them are courtyards whose roof is the sky. And our own guided version of this night runs 362 nights a year, closed only on 24 and 25 December and 1 January; on those three dates the self-guided plan is the only one available.

Questions people actually ask
Does this plan work if I'm travelling on my own?
Yes, structurally — every stop is a walk-in venue within a few blocks of the last one, so there is no booking to make and no group to organise. The part that is harder alone is the 11pm block onward, where doors get slower and standing in a queue by yourself is a poor use of the night. That is the point at which a guided group is worth the money rather than the earlier hours.
Is this only for people in their twenties?
The plan splits cleanly. The 6pm to 11pm half is dinner and bars — a courtyard, a table, a conversation you can hold. The 2am block is a club floor and is a different night entirely. Nothing forces you through both: stopping after the 11pm block is a complete evening, and the two halves are what make the same route work for very different groups.
What if I don't want a 4am finish?
Stop after the 11pm block. Szimpla Kert runs to 4am and Füge Udvar to 5am, so there is no venue pushing you out early and no last order forcing the decision — you leave when you decide to. A 6pm start and a midnight finish is six hours and covers the first four stops comfortably.
Which nights are worst for this exact plan?
Monday and Tuesday, because they are the two nights that lose two blocks at once — Doboz is closed Sunday to Tuesday, and Gozsdu Udvar drops to two rooms that shut at 1am on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. Sunday and Wednesday each lose one of the two. Szimpla Kert, Füge Udvar and Instant-Fogas keep the same hours seven nights a week, so the spine of the plan is unaffected on any night.
