Getting home in Budapest at night: night buses, tram 6 and taxis, mapped
Five timed routes take you home from Gozsdu Udvar after midnight: tram 4/6 along the Grand Boulevard, night buses 907, 909 and 979 from Deák Ferenc tér and Astoria, and the 100E to the airport. A single ticket is 500 HUF, or 700 HUF bought on board; a licensed taxi starts at 1,300 HUF.
Until 20 November 2026: trams 4 and 6 are replaced overnight on Sunday to Thursday nights. For maintenance, the trams do not run between 00:00 and 04:00 on those nights. A replacement bus signed "4-6" runs between Széll Kálmán tér and Móricz Zsigmond körtér via Újbuda-központ, and it stops at roadside bus stops rather than the tram platforms (BKK notice of 28 September 2026). BKK's timetable data carries the diversion to 22 November, so check BudapestGO on 20–22 November. On Friday and Saturday nights the tram runs through the night as normal. After the diversion ends the tram runs through every night, but check the terminus in BudapestGO: BKK's data sends tram 6 back to Móricz Zsigmond körtér from 22 November.
Five routes home from Gozsdu Udvar
Times are scheduled departures for the night of Friday 30 October 2026, taken from BKK's published timetable data (GTFS feed 2817.20261025, valid to 1 December 2026). They are timetables, not live arrivals: check the trip in the BudapestGO app before you leave, as BKK itself recommends since the night network was rebuilt on 1–2 July 2026. Distances are straight-line from the Király utca entrance of Gozsdu Udvar, not walking routes.

| 5 | Nyugati, Margit híd, Óbuda; or Örs vezér tere | Deák Ferenc tér, about 310 m | Night bus 909; night trolleybus 980 | 909: Deák Ferenc tér 01:12, Nyugati pályaudvar 01:20, Óbuda, Bogdáni út 01:38. 980: Deák Ferenc tér 01:33, Örs vezér tere 02:01 | Both every 30 minutes; 909 from 00:10, 980 from 01:33 |
On Sunday to Thursday nights until the diversion ends, routes 1 and 2 become the "4-6" replacement bus between about 00:00 and 04:00, toward Móricz Zsigmond körtér roughly every 7 minutes in BKK's data. Bus 912 is hourly, so it is the route to plan around rather than to wait for. The 100E has a long gap after 01:02, which is worth knowing before you leave a bar at quarter past one.

BKK names Astoria, Deák Ferenc tér, Móricz Zsigmond körtér, Blaha Lujza tér, Örs vezér tere and Széll Kálmán tér as the main night hubs, and less frequent buses wait for each other there so you can change. Night bus numbers changed in July 2026 too, so a line number from an older guide may be wrong: 909, for example, is now the night partner of day bus 9. Within the district itself, public transport is rarely needed; the question is only the last leg.
Tickets at night
Regular fares apply on night services, and every ticket valid on a line by day is valid on it by night.
- Single ticket: 500 Ft, or 700 Ft bought on board. You can buy tickets at any hour in the BudapestGO app or from BKK ticket machines.
- 24-hour travelcard: 2,750 Ft; 72-hour: 5,750 Ft.
- 100E airport bus: its own 2,500 Ft ticket. The ordinary single is not valid on it.
- Tapping a bank card (Pay&GO) works on the metro and the 100E. BKK does not list it for trams or night buses.
- Tickets are checked continuously on tram 6 at night, and by spot checks on night buses. Single buses board by the front door only.
Prices from BKK, checked 25 October 2026.
Taxis: what they cost and which to take
Budapest taxi fares are fixed by the city, metered, and identical for every operator at every hour. From 1 August 2026 the tariff is 1,300 Ft base fare, 521 Ft per kilometre and 130 Ft per minute, with a 2,100 Ft base fare for journeys to or from the airport. The impact study behind the new tariff put an average 5 km ride at 4,290 Ft under the new tariff. You can pay by cash or card.
A licensed Budapest taxi is yellow, with "minősített budapesti taxi" on the left front door, yellow number plates and the official fare table on the dashboard and both rear doors. BKK's advice is to get only into a licensed taxi and to order it by app or by phone. The licensed companies it lists are Bolt, City Taxi, Elit Taxi, Főtaxi and Uber Taxi.
Bolt in Budapest dispatches licensed taxis at the regulated fare: the app shows an estimate, and the taximeter sets the final price. Uber appears on that list as "Uber Taxi", a licensed taxi company.
The one taxi rule worth repeating: do not ask a driver where to drink, and do not accept a suggestion. The UK Foreign Office warns that some drivers are paid a commission to bring passengers to certain venues, which is how taxi drivers who steer you to a bar feed the bill scam.
Staying safe on the way
On night services, BKK advises sitting close to the driver or, on a tram, in the first car, and asking the driver or the security guards on duty on most night lines for help if you feel in danger. It also says to beware of pickpockets, which the UK Foreign Office says are more likely on busy public transport. The wider picture, from drink spiking to the numbers to call, is on our guide to staying safe after dark.
What's open on the way home
One late kitchen passed our screening: Csirke Csibész, Nagymező utca 35, listed as open until 5 am from Wednesday to Saturday by both Google and We Love Budapest. Its Google listing was operational when checked on 25 October 2026; the second source dates from February 2024, so check the hours before you rely on them.
When the night ends
Our crawl arrives at its final club around 1:30 am, and you can stay there until 6 am. Leave at 1:30 on a Friday and the tram is still running about every eight minutes; stay to the end and the first metros are already back. In between is the window this page is for. Which bars outlast four o'clock, and whether to stay, is the 4 AM decision. If you are on your own, the hour-by-hour plan for the end of a solo night builds the way home in from the start.
You can also start the night with a group: a guided crawl that walks between bars together, with a welcome drink in every bar.
