Budapest New Year's Eve fireworks: what happens at midnight and where to watch
As of 6 November 2026 we found no announcement of a city-run fireworks show for New Year's Eve in Budapest. The rockets at midnight are private, legal only from 20:00 to 02:00 and only outside protected zones. Below: 31 December hour by hour, and where to stand.
Checked 6 November 2026. No 2026 notice about the night appears on budapest.hu, bkk.hu or police.hu yet. BKK posted last year's transport notices on 17 and 29 December.
Budapest's giant fireworks happen in August
The country's great fireworks night is 20 August, St Stephen's Day. In 2026 Economx put the drones over the Danube at about 2,000, against 1,500 in previews, and ten minutes of fireworks closed a show billed at about 30 minutes. BKK's notice says the Chain Bridge closed to pedestrians too from 19:00. The year before, Euronews reported more than 45,000 pyrotechnics, though figures for that year differ.
The official papers for 31 December read very differently. The city decree, the city's explainer and the police notice all regulate private rockets, and none announces a display.
31 December 2026, hour by hour
Until 16:02: daylight
The sun rises at 07:32 on Thursday 31 December and sets at 16:02. Use the light to walk up to a viewpoint and learn the way. Széchenyi opens at 08:00 for a morning at the thermal baths, and both big Christmas markets stay open on the day from 11:00.
19:00: the first real choice of the night
Our crawl meets at Oktogon, in front of Burger King, at 19:00. That is two hours ahead of its usual 21:00. It is one way to spend the evening: welcome champagne, three bars, then a night that ends at Instant-Fogas, party ticket included, worth €50. The ticket is €89.99 per person: code CRAWL gives you this price in the booking window, where the ticket shows €99.99 until you type it.
The other way is the viewpoint or the river. If you would rather be on the river at midnight or on a hill, that takes the place of the crawl for the night. Choose one before 19:00.
20:00: the legal window opens
From now on, the city decree allows rockets outside the protected zones. District V has its own decree too, and we could not find its 2026 text.
Midnight: rockets and an anthem
The rockets are private. On public media last year the national anthem played at midnight, and 444.hu reported the greeting after it going out on five TV channels and four radio stations. We did not find a 2026 schedule. Ferenc Kölcsey finished the poem on 22 January 1823, according to the Parliamentary Library. Infostart dates the first performance of Ferenc Erkel's melody to 2 July 1844, at the National Theatre.
02:00: the legal window shuts
Class 2 and 3 fireworks are banned across Budapest from here. Sparklers stay legal, as they are every day.
03:00: the markets close
Advent Bazilika and Vörösmarty tér both list a 03:00 closing, though Vörösmarty's craft stalls and railway finish on 28 December. We found no midnight programme on either market's site; Vörösmarty's says only that the site is being prepared for a New Year's Eve party. Last year all four metro lines ran all night, but that was 2025, and the night network was rebuilt on 1 to 2 July 2026. Check BKK in late December, and read the routes home before you set out.
1 January: the crawl rests
Our crawl is closed on 1 January, one of only three closed nights in the year. It runs a guided night out on the nights either side of New Year: 30 December and from 2 January, at the usual 21:00.
Why the city cut the fireworks window in half
Rockets used to be legal from 18:00 on 31 December to 06:00 on 1 January. Decree 27/2025 cut those 12 hours to six. The city's explainer lists its reasons: complaints from residents, noise and light that panic pets and wild animals, air pollution, fire risk, and several tonnes of pyrotechnic waste.
| Zone on the city map | What it covers | Rule |
|---|---|---|
| White | Everywhere else | Legal from 20:00 on 31 December to 02:00 on 1 January |
| Protected (tan) | Registered residential buildings, plus any plot inside or touching a line 50 metres from their walls | Banned all day on 31 December and 1 January |
| Highly protected (light blue) | Parks, forests, zoos, hospitals and care homes, plus a 100-metre buffer | Banned all year |
The city says the point is that every resident's home and its immediate surroundings are spared. Police say a breach can cost 200,000 to 1,200,000 forint, and petards are banned all year. Telex reported that on the last New Year's Eve six on-the-spot fines were issued in Budapest, with action taken in 33 cases under the city decree and three under District V's own decree, and 181 packages taken over illegal sales. The city's zone map is public. For the street side of the night, read our guide to Budapest nightlife safety.
Where to stand at midnight
The decree limits launching, not watching, and that changes the famous viewpoints. On our reading of the city map, Gellért Hill with the Citadella, Fisherman's Bastion with Szentháromság tér, and all of Margaret Island are light blue, so no class 2 or 3 rocket may legally go up from them on any day. You look out from there at the rockets going up across the city.
- Gellért Hill. One guide puts it simply: it "gives you the whole city at once". We could not confirm access to the Citadella itself at midnight.
- Fisherman's Bastion. Its official site says it is open all year, day and night, though it also prints shorter hours. The site charges for the top terraces but lists 24 to 31 December as free days, and we could not confirm how either works at midnight.
Be careful in the squares. At Vörösmarty tér on New Year's Eve 2023, several rockets exploded among the crowd and a woman's hand was burned. Police said it was not a public event in the legal sense, and the same report's headline says they found the fireworks not irregular.
Why it's called szilveszter, and why tradition keeps chicken off the table tomorrow
Hungarians call the night szilveszter. Pope Sylvester I's feast falls on 31 December, and Daily News Hungary gives him as the source of the name. Hungary's ethnographic lexicon records an older New Year's Eve noise: herdsmen, lads and youths making noise on this night. In 1960s and 1970s Budapest, We Love Budapest reports, the noise was paper trumpets, and it quotes a 1962 newspaper on thousands of them blowing their "midnight-and-morning march".
The food rules for the next day, and much stranger customs, are in Hungarian New Year traditions.
Dress for anything. HungaroMet's December average for Budapest is 0.8 °C, but the 31 December record runs from -20.8 °C in 1976 to +15.4 °C in 2021.
Who books our crawl? Of 2,153 direct website bookings from January 2024 to June 2026, 98.8% came from abroad, led by the UK, the US, Germany, France and Australia.
