Budapest Christmas markets: 2026 dates, hours and a walking route

Advent Bazilika and Vörösmarty tér, the two Budapest Christmas markets with organiser-published 2026 dates, both open on 13 November 2026. Advent Bazilika runs to 1 January 2027. Vörösmarty runs until the early hours of 1 January, but its craft stalls and little train finish on 28 December.

Checked 6 November 2026. Hours come from the two organisers' own pages. Neither has published 2026 food prices yet, so prices below are labelled 2025.

What makes each market worth the walk

Advent Bazilika has won a European vote four times. The organiser's history page says the market is 15 years old this year. European Best Destinations calls it four times a winner of its best Christmas market vote, and the organiser reports 51,253 votes in 2022 alone. The organiser also says it sat out the 2024 vote and was named Europe's best Christmas market of all time that year, though European Best Destinations' own pages list the winning years differently. Everyone may visit free, according to its house rules.

A king's preserved hand is inside the church behind the stalls. The Basilica keeps the Szent Jobb, the preserved right hand of King St Stephen, at the Assumption altar in the nave. Maria Theresa had it brought to Buda in 1771. Up at the main dome, a terrace circles it at 65 metres, which the Basilica calls the highest viewpoint in Pest. Usual terrace hours are 9:00 to 19:00, and the page lists no holiday exceptions.

Vörösmarty tér went by another name until 1926. The square was mostly known as Gizella tér before 1926 and now carries the name of the poet Mihály Vörösmarty, whose statue was unveiled there in 1908. Its train is free. After 28 December the craft stalls give way to preparations for a New Year's Eve event.

What you're eating, and why witches come into it

  • Szaloncukor. These bonbons hang on Hungarian Christmas trees. The novelist Mór Jókai wrote of them on his family's tree in 1870. The word comes from the German "salonzuckerl", and it went on Hungary's official Hungarikum list in 2024.
  • Kürtőskalács. The chimney cake is named for its kürtő shape, and an early recipe sits in a Transylvanian cookbook of 1784. It's also an official Hungarikum.
  • Bejgli. One food-history column traces the word to the German "beugen", to bend. The same column says poppy seed, its traditional filling, was once believed to drive off witches.
  • Mulled wine and a plate, 2025 prices. Last season the organisers said plain mulled wine would cost a fixed 1,500 Ft at every hot-drink point in both markets, and a reporter saw 1,900 Ft at one stall. They also said each large kitchen would offer one dish a day at a fixed 1,600 Ft. Organisers quoted plain lángos at 2,400 Ft and goulash from 4,000 Ft. The organisers announced last season's prices on 13 November, so expect 2026 prices around then.

The calendar is odder than the food. On 6 December comes Mikulás, who tests children, then rewards them or punishes them with a virgács, a birch rod. On 13 December, Luca Day, sewing and spinning were taboo across the country because they would sew up the hens. A Luca chair built from 13 kinds of wood, carried to midnight Mass, was said to let you spot the witches. The Christmas tree itself belongs to the evening of 24 December, with the gifts on or under it. In one regional account, from the Ipoly area, small children are told that the baby Jesus brings the tree, which is why it is decorated in secret.

Fitting the markets around New Year's Eve

The markets are one part of Budapest in December, which has the rest of the month.

Our crawl is closed on 24 and 25 December and 1 January, so those days are yours. Otherwise, you have two good options.

An evening on an earlier day. The light painting is promised every afternoon, so an evening on 30 December works, with Advent Bazilika open to 22:00 (derived from regular hours) and Vörösmarty to 21:00, though Vörösmarty's craft stalls will have finished. For a warmer day out, the thermal baths over the holidays keep their own hours.

In daylight on the 31st. Both markets open at 11:00, so walk the route early in the day. On that one night we meet at 19:00 at Oktogon, in front of Burger King, and leave for the New Year's Eve crawl, with the party ticket included: three bars, welcome champagne and Instant-Fogas as the last stop, a ticket worth €50. Plan on being finished at the markets well before evening. If you want to stay out for the rockets, see what happens at midnight instead.

On ordinary nights you needn't decide before you travel. Of our direct website bookings from January 2024 to June 2026, we could place 86% by the booker's IP address; about a quarter of those were made from inside Hungary, and 83% of those were for the same day. On other open nights you can go from the market to a night out with a guide, meeting at Oktogon at 21:00. Groups can ask for a private crawl built around their numbers.
