New Year's Eve Danube cruises in Budapest: the boats, the river and its winter history

Yes, boats are listed to sail the Danube in Budapest on New Year's Eve. Silverline Cruises lists New Year's Eve 2026 programmes with a midnight toast, and Duna Cruises has a New Year's Eve page with a midnight toast. The river once stopped István Széchenyi on his way to his father's funeral, and Hungarian tradition dates the idea of the Chain Bridge to that moment.

Checked 6 November 2026. Boat details are as the operators state them. Look up each brand by name for current dates and tickets. We don't compare them.

What you can look for from the river at night

Landmarks by the Danube in Budapest, in no particular order. This is not any boat's route.
LandmarkThe fact worth knowing
Parliament96 metres to the top of the dome, built over 17 years from 1885 to 1902, according to parlament.hu
Chain BridgeOpened in 1849, blown up in January 1945, and reopened exactly 100 years to the day after its first opening
Gellért Hill and the CitadellaA steep limestone rise of 771 feet, topped by a fortress the Austrian army built to keep watch over the town
Margaret IslandA park in the river about 2.5 km long

UNESCO has listed the Banks of the Danube as World Heritage since 1987. You will be looking at them in the dark: sunset is just after 16:00 on 31 December, and HungaroMet's December average for Budapest is 0.8 °C, so dress for it.

The winter behind the Chain Bridge story

At the end of 1820, István Széchenyi reached Pest on his way to his father's funeral and could not cross. The Rothschild Archive says ice floes had made the river extremely dangerous and he searched for days for a fisherman willing to risk it; HVG says the pontoon bridge had just been taken up. He is reported to have said he would give a year's income for a permanent bridge. HVG, which reports the remark, says Hungarian tradition dates the idea of the Chain Bridge to this moment, as if it had occurred to the count alone.

The river had been a seasonal wall for a long time. Boats lashed together made a pontoon bridge in summer, and it could not be used when the Danube began to freeze or when the ice broke. In 1800 more than a thousand wedding guests who had walked over the ice from Pest were trapped in Buda for several days when it began to break up in the night.

The bridge that resulted was designed around that ice, using a three-part chain so that as few piers as possible would stand in its way. William Tierney Clark drew it. Adam Clark, his 28-year-old Scottish namesake, supervised the work. It cost 6.2 million forints, more than half of Hungary's yearly revenue. When retreating German troops blew up all of Budapest's bridges on 18 January 1945, the wrecks, Telex reports, caused ice jams of their own, and the rebuilders reused old material found in the river.

The ice can still win

On 13 March 1838, after an extremely cold winter, ice piled up at the tip of Csepel Island and the Danube broke through the dyke on the Pest side. It destroyed 2,281 buildings in Pest and left more than 50,000 people homeless. Baron Miklós Wesselényi, a leading nobleman, took a boat out to rescue people; one scholarly article calls him the boatman of the deluge.

Hungary still keeps an icebreaker fleet, with 22 vessels on duty in January 2026, according to Telex. That same month, Telex reported, ice drift led to a shipping ban, the first since 2017. December water averaged 3.7 °C where the Danube enters Hungary and 3.5 °C where it leaves, over 1951 to 2010. Sources disagree on when it last froze across, and whether that was at Budapest.

The woman on your boarding address

The docks are on Jane Haining rakpart, named in 2010, according to Wikipedia. Haining was a Scottish missionary who became matron of the Scottish Mission's girls' home in Budapest in 1932, caring for 400 children, predominantly Jewish girls. Ordered home in 1940, she refused to leave. The Gestapo arrested her on 25 April 1944 and she was deported to Auschwitz. Yad Vashem recognised her as Righteous Among the Nations in 1997.

The brands to look up for 31 December

  • Silverline Cruises (Dock 11) lists a New Year's Eve dinner cruise with a Prosecco cocktail, five courses and music, and a separate celebration cruise with a DJ and a midnight toast. It says one of its ships was built in 2013 to a unique design.
  • Duna Cruises (Dock 10 in its site footer) lists a New Year's Eve Prosecco cruise with a toast in front of Parliament at midnight. It traces its story to a rebuild of Lake Balaton's first steamship, which it says captures the Hungarian Reform Era. It calls fireworks viewing an unofficial programme. See what happens at midnight on land.
  • Legenda (Dock 7) publishes no New Year's Eve programme. Its regular winter timetable runs to 31 December, with a glass-covered deck and commentary in 30 languages, and it dates its experience from 1990.

Other ways to fit the river in

On the night itself, a midnight boat takes the place of our crawl, so it's one or the other. We meet at 19:00 at Oktogon for three bars and welcome champagne, then a New Year's Eve crawl ending at Instant-Fogas, with a party ticket worth €50 included. That's two hours ahead of our usual start.

By day on the 31st, Legenda's regular winter timetable also lists daytime sightseeing boats, so the river can be a daytime plan.

On 30 December, Legenda's regular winter timetable also lists evening sightseeing boats. Pair it with an evening on 30 December at the markets. For a table on land, read about the grand New Year's Eve dinners. If the river in winter sounds too cold, the thermal baths are the opposite. Our regular crawl runs on other open nights, a guided night out on a different night in town.
