Ruin bar
A ruin bar (romkocsma in Hungarian) is a bar set up inside an abandoned or derelict building, decorated with salvaged furniture and art. The form was born in Budapest's old Jewish Quarter in the early 2000s.
Where the term comes from
When the buildings of District VII sat empty after decades of neglect, people opened temporary bars inside them rather than renovating. The decay became the aesthetic. The first and best known is Szimpla Kert, opened in 2002.
