What a night out in Budapest actually costs

Prices last reviewed: 19 August 2026. Venue prices are in Hungarian forint (HUF), because that is what you will be charged. The euro figures beside them are a conversion at one dated reference rate, not a price any bar quotes. Our own ticket price is set in euro and is never converted.

How much is a beer in Budapest?

A half-litre draught beer in a Budapest ruin bar costs 1,250–2,000 HUF (€3.43–5.49) in August 2026. The same half litre bought in a shop costs about 394 HUF (€1.08), because the national average price of lager is 787 HUF per litre. Buying at the bar rather than the shop multiplies the price of a beer by roughly three to five.

That multiple, not the headline price, is the number worth carrying. It is why the cheapest night in the district is not the one that finds the cheapest bar but the one that starts later, and why the drinking-before-you-go-out habit is near-universal among visitors who stay a week rather than a weekend.

How much does a pack of cigarettes cost in Budapest?

A pack of 20 cigarettes in Hungary costs between 1,450 and 2,790 HUF (€3.98–7.66) from 20 August 2026, with a median of 2,190 HUF (€6.01) across all 515 packs on the official list. Marlboro runs 2,230–2,770 HUF (€6.12–7.60). These are set by the regulator, not the shop, so the price is the same in every tobacconist in the country.

That last point is the one visitors get wrong. Hungary publishes a binding retail price for every tobacco product, revised at most twice a week and taking effect only on a Monday or a Thursday. Nobody undercuts it and nobody marks it up — hunting for a cheaper pack is wasted effort.

Where you can buy them is the part that catches people out. Tobacco in Hungary may only be sold in a state-licensed National Tobacco Shop — Nemzeti Dohánybolt — under the 2012 retail-monopoly law. Bars do not sell cigarettes. Neither do supermarkets, petrol stations or the late-night shops around the party district. Those tobacco shops keep their own hours and most are shut long before the bars are, so anyone who runs out at two in the morning is not stepping outside for two minutes; they are out of the venue and looking for one of the few that trades late. Buy before the night starts, or plan on borrowing.

Where the money actually goes

Two mechanics push the real number away from the menu price, and neither one is printed in large type.

The first is the cup deposit. A ruin bar serves into a reusable cup and charges a deposit on top of the drink, refunded when the cup comes back over the bar. It is charged per cup, not per person or per night — so a group that keeps buying rounds, drifting to the next room and abandoning half-full cups pays that deposit several times and reclaims none of it. Running crawls through these venues, this is the single most common way our guests lose money without noticing, and it never appears on anyone's budget beforehand.

The second is service charge. Order standing at a counter and what you hand over is what the drink costs. Sit down at a table in the same district and a service charge lands on the bill instead. Hungarian venues have to print it on the menu, which means it is always knowable before the first round and almost never read until after the last.

What moves the number, and what cannot

Half of this page is fixed by someone other than the venue. The taxi tariff, the transport fare and the retail price of a cigarette pack are set centrally and are identical across the whole city, so no bar, kiosk or driver can quote you a different one. The taxi rate in particular changed on 1 August 2026 — anything written before that date is now wrong, which is worth knowing when you compare guides.

The other half moves freely. Drink prices are the venue's own decision and climb with the night of the week, the size of the crowd and how deep into the summer you are visiting; the same beer costs differently on a wet Tuesday in March and a Saturday in August. The same night, bought as one ticket

Everything above prices a night you assemble yourself, in forint, one transaction at a time. The alternative is the fixed euro price in the last row of the first table, which moves with neither the exchange rate nor what a given bar decided to charge this weekend, and what the pub crawl includes is a group that walks between the venues together, a welcome drink in every bar rather than only the first, and no queueing at any door including the club at the end. Can I pay in euros in a Budapest bar?

Some venues accept euro and convert at a rate they set themselves and print on the menu — one District VII venue posted 1 EUR = 380 HUF on 5 August 2026, when the European Central Bank reference rate was 362.08. A posted rate is fixed while the market moves, so on any given night it can land either side of the real one. Is the price on the menu the price I pay?

Not always, and the gap is structural rather than sharp practice. A refundable deposit is added when the drink is served into a reusable cup, and table service adds a percentage that counter service does not. Both are disclosed on the menu by law; both are routinely missed in the first ten minutes of a night out.
