The route: five stops, 1.8 km, 24 minutes on foot

Total: 1.8 km, 24 minutes of walking, not counting the time you spend inside. The longest single leg is 645 metres.

Wednesday to Saturday, add Doboz — Klauzál u. 10, 1072 Budapest. It sits 49 metres from Füge Udvar's door, under a minute's walk, and rejoins the route 5 minutes from Instant-Fogas. It is shut on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday, which is the only reason it isn't one of the main five.

Not all five are ruin bars in the strict sense. Szimpla Kert and Füge Udvar are; Mazel Tov is a restaurant that turns into a bar, Doboz and Instant-Fogas are listed as nightclubs, and Gozsdu Udvar is a courtyard full of separate venues rather than one bar. They are simply the six doors that make a District VII night work in sequence.

This is a route we put together for people walking it themselves. It is not the itinerary of our guided crawl — that lineup is not published, and booking a place does not buy you this particular sequence of bars.

Why this order — it is not the shortest one

The geographically shortest way round these five stops is a 15-minute walk: Gozsdu Udvar, Szimpla Kert, Füge Udvar, Mazel Tov, Instant-Fogas. We are deliberately recommending a 24-minute one, because that short version marches you to Mazel Tov as the fourth stop of the night, several hours after it has locked the door.

We pulled every stop's opening hours on 5 August 2026. One venue closes early, and everything else runs late:

The route is ordered by that column, not by distance, and one row does all the work. Mazel Tov and Instant-Fogas are 33 metres apart on the same stretch of Akácfa utca, so the obvious move is to leave them both to the end and take them as a single stop. Do that and you will stand outside a dark restaurant: on a weeknight Mazel Tov stops serving at 23:00, hours before anyone walking a five-bar night gets that far. That single 23:00 wall is what pulls Mazel Tov to the front of the night, and pulling it forward is what makes the route longer than the map says it needs to be.

We checked this rather than assumed it. Starting at 20:30 and allowing an hour per bar, the 15-minute route reaches Mazel Tov at about 23:45 — three quarters of an hour after last orders on a weeknight, and still too late on a Friday. It is not a slightly worse route; it is one that does not work.

The rest of the order follows from the same column, with less drama. Gozsdu Udvar goes second because its bars are the next to close, and arriving around half nine leaves hours in hand instead of the seventy-odd minutes you would have if you left it until midnight. Szimpla and Füge Udvar sit in the middle because 4 and 5 AM put no real pressure on anyone. Instant-Fogas goes last because it runs to 6 AM every day of the week, so it absorbs however long the earlier stops overrun by. Nothing after it can close on you.

What changes between a weeknight and a weekend

Four things, all of them straight out of the hours above:

• Doboz is a Wednesday-to-Saturday venue. On a Sunday, Monday or Tuesday it is not a stop at all — walk stop 4 to stop 5 direct and the route is the plain five.
• Mazel Tov gains an hour on Friday, Saturday and Sunday: midnight instead of 23:00. That hour is enough to make it stop two rather than stop one if you are starting late.
• Gozsdu is a different courtyard midweek. Blue Bird Karaoke, the latest thing inside it, is shut Monday to Wednesday, and Szomszéd closes at 1 AM early in the week against 3 AM on Friday and Saturday. Arrive late on a Tuesday and the passage is still open but much of it is not.
• Szimpla Kert opens far earlier at the weekend — noon on Saturday, 9 AM on Sunday, against 3 PM on weekdays. A Sunday-afternoon start to the ruin bars of District VII is genuinely possible in a way it is not midweek.

Timing the night

Work backwards from the closing times rather than forwards from dinner. Exactly one stop is on a clock: Mazel Tov, at 23:00 on a weeknight. Leave for it around 20:30 and you get a comfortable hour there before it shuts, which is the only piece of timing this route genuinely demands.

After that the pressure comes off entirely. Gozsdu Udvar is a passage rather than a venue and never closes as such — you can walk through it at any hour — but the bars inside it do, and they are the next thing to run out: roughly 1 AM for Cafe Vian and Szomszéd, later at the weekend, with Blue Bird Karaoke running to 4 AM but shut Monday to Wednesday. Arriving there around half nine means none of that matters. From there it is Szimpla until 4 AM, Füge Udvar until 5, Instant-Fogas until 6. One stop on a clock, four that are not — that is the real structure of the route. Every stop on this route sits inside Erzsébetváros, and the district is small enough that wrong turns are cheap: at no point are you more than about 650 metres from the next door. What we have deliberately not put on this page is what any of it costs, because covers and drink prices move around and a stale number is worse than none — what a night out in Budapest actually costs keeps those figures current instead.

If you would rather not navigate at all

Walking this yourself means five sets of doors, five queues and five decisions about whether the place you are standing in is the one you wanted. Either way, the rule that actually protects your night is the one this page is built on: in District VII the constraint is never distance. It is whether the door is still open when you get there.
