Ruin bars Budapest map

Every major ruin bar in Budapest sits within a ten-minute walk of the others. They're concentrated in District VII, the old Jewish Quarter — one neighbourhood, a dozen venues, all reachable on foot.

Where the ruin bars are

Budapest's ruin bars are not spread across the city. They sit inside a single neighbourhood: District VII, the old Jewish Quarter, roughly bounded by Király utca to the north, Rákóczi út to the south, and the grand boulevard of Erzsébet körút to the west.

The core cluster is compact enough to walk end to end in fifteen minutes:

  • Szimpla Kert — Kazinczy utca 14. The original, and still the most photographed.
  • Grandio — Király utca 13. Rooftop terrace, close to the tram stops.
  • Kuplung — Király utca 46. Former garage, big courtyard.
  • Ankert — Paulay Ede utca 33. Quieter garden bar near Deák Square.
  • Ellátóház — Akácfa utca 47. Local crowd, unpretentious.
  • Instant-Fogas — Akácfa utca 51. Multi-room club complex, open late.
  • Corvintető — Blaha Lujza tér 1–2. Rooftop on a brutalist department store, panoramic views.
  • Füge Udvar — Király utca 28. Intimate courtyard.
  • Dürer Kert — Ajtósi Dürer sor 19–21. Slightly further east in District XIV, known for live music.

Getting there

The quickest metro connection is line M2 (red) to Blaha Lujza tér, which drops you one block from Akácfa utca and a short walk from Kazinczy utca. From the city centre, tram lines 4 and 6 run along Erzsébet körút and stop at Wesselényi utca and Rákóczi út — both within easy walking distance of the main cluster.

Rideshare apps work well for reaching outlying venues like Dürer Kert. Parking in District VII at night is difficult; public transport or walking between bars is the practical choice.

Navigating the district at night

The streets between the bars are well lit and pedestrian-friendly. Kazinczy utca in particular is often busy with people moving between venues — you're unlikely to feel lost. The best strategy is to start near Szimpla and work outward from there, since it anchors the neighbourhood.

If you'd rather not plan the route yourself, the Budapest pub crawl visits several ruin bars in one evening with a guide who knows the layout, handles the queue-skipping, and keeps the group together between stops.
