Kuplung: the ruin bar born in a mechanic shop
Kuplung means clutch — a nod to the car-repair workshop that once occupied this space on Király utca. It became one of downtown Budapest's longest-running ruin bars, mixing urban art with a no-fuss local vibe.
What makes it special
Kuplung's name gives away its past: the Hungarian word for clutch, because this space was a car mechanic workshop before it became a bar. The industrial bones are still visible — exposed brickwork, rough surfaces — layered over with urban art pieces and a low-key minimalist fit-out that lets the building speak for itself.
- Location: Király utca 46, District VI
- Vibe: local, unpretentious, urban
- Good for: drink specials, sports broadcasts, a crowd that actually lives in Budapest
It opened nearly a decade ago and became one of the longest-running ruin bars in the downtown core, outlasting dozens of trendier spots that came and went.

Visiting on the crawl
Kuplung sits in the heart of Budapest's bar district, close to the other venues we cover on the Budapest pub crawl. If you want to explore the neighbourhood on your own before or after the crawl, it's an easy walk from Oktogon.
