Belgian beer has become a very trendy thing, and one of the things that has made Belgium stick out as the beer capital of the world is their approach to the subject. Far from the purists in Germany, the Belgians like their beer strong enough to get properly drunk, and are not want to flavour their beers with orange peels, spices, and even fruit. The process is quite simple: fruit is simply put into the cask that the brew is fermenting in, and is left to ferment together. Belga Söröző

Simply and quite aptly named the Belgian Beer house, this wonderful little restaurant and pub has all the things going for it; a unique repertoire of beer that cannot be found anywhere else in the city, a wonderful location, great food and a unique atmosphere. Located on the Danube overlooking the corso around the mighty river on the Buda side, the food is traditional Belgian food (French food, German portions), and the atmosphere is a mix of a pub and an abbey, it is a veritable sanctum of brew.

Csakajósör!

This establishment is a new breed all to itself. Part shop, part pub, part gallery, this establishment is a new twist in enjoying beer. The shop has a selection of beers that is truly a sight to behold, with most every beer imaginable from all over the world being present, albeit in small numbers. There is also a draft in the shop and a little club area where you can sit down and enjoy a brew. Their name means “only good beer”, and they keep true to their name. Really reasonable down to earth prices and excellent quality makes this place one of the stand outs of Budapest.

Élesztő

If you are interested in home brews, in local microbreweries and in small batches that are literally taken from the cask in front of your eyes, then Élesztő (which means brewer’s yeast in Hungarian) is definitely the place for you. A large selection of awesome beers, including quite a few fruity ones are available here and all are local wonders, with a few imports. This place is a tad bit more expensive than the others on the list, but is also as close to a brewery as you can get without going to a brewery, and most of the staff brew their own beer. A place for afficionados.

Rizmajer

Csepel is home to one of the best breweries in the country. One of the few microbreweries to make it big and produce large scale is Rizmajer, and they have an intense selection of all kinds of fruity beers, but their cognac and cherry one is by far the most popular (they also make corn and ginger beers as well). They have staple beers that they keep making, and there are specials just for a season or for a few weeks as well, so it is always useful to get a good look at what is going on in their brewery/restaurant.

Ruin bars

Ruin bars are the hip new thing in Budapest, although they have been around for quite a while; part decaying atmosphere, part all night rager, these clubs, like Szimpla kert and Instant / Fogas, take minimalism and what the city has to offer to transform it into a space with atmosphere, with a unique feeling to it, a completely Budapest experience. They are the best places to party today in Budapest, as they are where young people and the more refined side of Budapest locals like to party, so this is the best night out in Budapest for sure. These clubs are usually massive, and Instant is two blocks of flats opened into one psychedelic indoor forest of bars, dance floors, basements, balconies and surreal installations. Although the concept of going to numerous places in a single night is alive and well in Budapest, and has been for a long period of time, the concept of a ritualistic walking from pub to pub in the form of a pub crawl is something we just did not have. Historically people have their favourite dives or hang outs, and are content to start drinking at home (in a pre-game session), and then go to their regular place and be there. Certain countries, like England for example, have historical examples of particularly urban romps through the night that stop at several pubs, or have a historical route that people would take. The idea of a pub crawl has become universal since then, and has become a facet of tourism; it is a great way to popularise the pubs, bars and clubs of any given city, and Budapest, with its boisterous club scene, its wonderful nightlife, and the fact that all of the best places are within walking distance of each other in a dynamic and hip part of the city, has taken naturally to this concept.

The 7^th District

The party capital of Budapest is undoubtedly the 7^th district, and it is where most of the pub crawls in the city take place. Although going to the other districts and touching upon the 5^th, 6^th and even 8^th districts, the crawls are always centred on the self-named “party district”. This district is significant because it is small enough, central enough, and interesting enough to become the home of most of the clubs in the city. The old Jewish ghetto is located in this district, as well as many museums and pieces of living urban history, the streets are littered with quaint squares and little parks that lighten up the district and make it cosier and give it a character where the passer by just wants to sit out and hang out on the street. The tiny, winding streets of this district are also home to some of the biggest racial and religious diversity of the city, and it is one of the few truly international districts of Budapest. This district also caters to travellers and tourists, as there are several touristy areas and many hostels, hotels and accommodations here as well, and is the location where most of the expats live.

Ruin bars

A novelty of the inner city of Budapest and particularly of the 7^th district are the Ruin Pubs, brilliant business ventures that makes perfect use of the opportunities in this part of the city. As much of the beautiful old buildings are run down, the 7^th district does exude a kind of grungy atmosphere, but one that is teeming with sophisticated and fun loving local life. The idea behind ruin bars was to keep this atmosphere going while providing a party place for all of the tourists and expats that come to this district, thus having a club that was run down and fits in well with the decaying elegance of the 7^th district, but inside is a modern bar with all of the luxuries you would expect from a bar that caters to expats and travellers. The interiors are done in an absurdist, surreal way, most of it recycled from the trash and the evictions that are frequent in this part of the city.
