Ruins
Ruins are the surviving physical remains of a structure — a building, wall, or settlement — that has fallen into decay, been damaged, or been only partly demolished. The word is used both for ancient archaeological sites and for modern derelict buildings.
Ruins and Budapest's ruin bars
Budapest's District VII contains many buildings left derelict after decades of under-investment. Rather than demolishing or renovating them, entrepreneurs in the early 2000s began opening bars inside the crumbling shells, deliberately preserving the ruins as the décor. The result — the ruin bar — became one of the city's most celebrated contributions to global nightlife culture.
