Is Budapest safe at night for women? An honest answer

Yes, with a few habits. Official advisories rate Hungary Level 1 (US), "vigilance normale" (France) and green (Netherlands), name theft, overpriced bills and drink spiking, and none publishes a warning specific to women. No official source splits Budapest's risk by sex, so this answer rests on what they do say.

Night-out safety scorecard. Each Do cell rests on an official line, each Skip is its opposite, and each If-it-happens cell follows official or police guidance: UK Foreign Office (FCDO), US State Department security report (OSAC), BKK, the Hungarian police. Checked 25 October 2026.

If you need help: 112 for police and ambulance; operators also take calls in English. The Victim Support Line +36 80 225 225 is free and open 24/7, and the EU victim helpline 116 006 answers in English. An English-language crime-reporting line, +36 1 438 8080, is listed by the US State Department's security office and Finland's foreign ministry.

What the official sources say

No official advisory read for this page treats Budapest as unsafe for women, and none publishes a women-specific warning for Hungary. The US State Department rates the country Level 1, the UK Foreign Office carries no travel warning, France puts it under "vigilance normale" and the Netherlands rates it green. What they name is the same for everyone: theft, overpriced bills and drink spiking.

The bar-bill "honeypot" is the one risk the sources tie to a sex, and it is men: the US security report says criminals overcharge victims "typically men", and Spain's foreign ministry describes male tourists invited by pairs of women. That does not make women immune to the rest. The taxi-commission warning and the cashpoint escort apply to anyone, and how the bar-bill trick works covers both.

What the numbers can and cannot tell you

Say what is known, not what feels true. No official source splits Budapest's risk by sex, and the national statistics office, KSH, publishes no breakdown by the victim's sex, the hour or whether the victim was a visitor in the tables used here. What KSH does show is that registered crime in the Budapest region fell from 54,949 in 2024 to 43,910 in 2025, and battery from 1,211 to 1,110. The US security report adds that sexual assault rates fell nationally in 2024.

Drink spiking

This is the risk the official texts link to assault. FCDO: "If your drink is spiked it can make you vulnerable – for example to assault or robbery. Buy your own drinks and keep sight of them." The US security report calls drugging incidents rare and says to accept food or drink only from a server.

If you think you or a friend has been spiked, call 112, tell the operator exactly where you are, and ask for an ambulance. Then the Victim Support Line can explain your rights and the services available.

If you report

The Hungarian police treat you as a witness and interview you. You can ask for the interview to be conducted by an officer of your own sex, and if you fear the person who attacked you, you can ask for your personal details to be withheld from the case documents so that only the authorities see them.

For support afterwards, the Victim Support Line on +36 80 225 225 is free and runs 24/7, and the EU helpline 116 006 has offered information and guidance in English since February 2026. NANE, a Hungarian women's rights helpline for domestic and sexual violence, takes calls in Hungarian at limited hours, so it is not the first number for an English speaker.

Getting home

On night buses and trams, BKK advises sitting close to the driver or in the first car of a tram, and asking the driver or the security guards on most night lines for help if you feel in danger. For taxis, order a licensed one by app or phone; Finland's foreign ministry warns that cabs marked "freelancer" can overcharge. Routes, times and taxi prices are on getting home by night bus, tram or taxi.

Going out on your own

Many people do. Of the bookings made on our website over three years, 42.4% were for one person. If you want to plan a solo night around social events rather than bars, going out alone in Budapest lays it out hour by hour. If you would rather not plan the route, you can go out with a guided group that walks between bars together, with a welcome drink in every bar, or book a private pub crawl for just your own group. The rest of the city-wide advice is in our Budapest nightlife safety guide.

Who This Isn't For

This page's answer is a conditional yes, and the conditions are the scorecard. It does not hold for a night that breaks them:

  • Leaving a drink unattended, or accepting one from a stranger. FCDO links spiked drinks to assault, and France advises never leaving a drink unattended or accepting one from a stranger.
  • Taking a taxi offered outside a bar, or a driver's bar tip. BKK advises licensed taxis ordered by app or phone, and FCDO a reputable local company.
  • Walking home alone and intoxicated at five in the morning. The US security report advises against walking alone at night.

Questions people ask

Is Budapest safe at night for women?

Yes, with a few habits. No official advisory publishes a women-specific warning for Hungary, and the US State Department rates it Level 1. The risks they name for everyone are theft, overpriced bills and drink spiking, which FCDO links to assault. Buy your own drinks and keep sight of them, use licensed taxis ordered by app or phone, and keep 112 ready.

Is Budapest safe for solo female travellers?

The official sources do not split their advice by sex, and none warns women away from Budapest. Hungary is at Level 1 for the US, and FCDO carries no travel warning. The US security report advises not walking alone at night, so a solo traveller should plan the trip home before going out, by night bus, tram or a taxi ordered by app.

Is it safe to walk in Budapest at night?

The US State Department's security report designates no high-crime area in Hungary, but it does advise being aware of your surroundings and not walking alone at night. Busy public transport and tourist areas are where FCDO says pickpocketing is more likely. On night buses and trams, BKK advises sitting near the driver or in the first tram car.

What should I do if my drink is spiked in Budapest?

Call 112, tell the operator exactly where you are and ask for an ambulance; 112 operators also take calls in English. Afterwards the Victim Support Line, +36 80 225 225, is free and open 24/7, and the EU helpline 116 006 answers in English. If you report, you can ask to be interviewed by an officer of your own sex.
