Prague or Budapest for New Year's Eve? A dated comparison
Pick Prague for a daytime concert on the 31st and a longer market season. Pick Budapest for markets open to 03:00. Both cities restrict rockets. Weather does not decide it.
Checked 7 November 2026. Neither city has published its full 2026 plan: we found no Old Town Square programme, 31 December market hours or night transport plan for Prague, and no BKK notice for Budapest. Older items below carry their year.
The verdict, by kind of trip
- A concert during the day on the 31st: Prague. The city's portal lists the Czech Philharmonic at the Rudolfinum at 11:00 and 15:00.
- A long market season after New Year: Prague. One Czech tourism site gives 6 January as the end, against 1 January at Budapest's Basilica.
- A square with a stage: Prague, on 2024's evidence.
- A market still open after midnight: Budapest. Both big markets list 03:00 for 31 December 2026.
- Getting home: no winner. The 2025 metro notices differ, but we found nothing on Prague's night trams and buses.
- Rockets over the historic centre: neither. Both cities now restrict them.
When Prague is the better pick
Choose Prague if you want classical music before dark. The Czech Philharmonic's New Year concerts are listed for 31 December 2026 at 11:00 and 15:00, and for 1 January at 15:00 and 20:00. For the Budapest side of those days, read what is open in Budapest over the holidays.
Choose it for the square. On New Year's Eve 2024 a stage programme started on Old Town Square at about 17:00, with a band and a DJ, and went on to midnight. And choose it for markets you can still visit on the 5th: Old Town Square and Wenceslas Square are listed to 6 January 2027, again from a tourism site rather than the organiser.
When Budapest is the better pick
Choose Budapest for a late night that needs no ticket. Advent Bazilika and Vörösmarty tér both publish 03:00 closing for 31 December 2026, and you can read Budapest's two market squares on the 31st in detail. Prague's Old Town Square market closed at 15:00 on 31 December 2025. That is a different year, and its 2026 hours were not out.
Then there is the trip home, which we cannot call. In 2025 BKK ran the metros all night on New Year's Eve, while Radio Prague reported that Prague's metro would run for up to two hours after midnight. That compares one mode of transport in each city. We found nothing on Prague's night trams or buses, so we do not know how the two cities' whole night networks compare. Neither 2026 plan is published.
The rockets: the same story, five years apart
Prague's traditional city show was a New Year's Day event, on 1 January. And in December 2023 the city confirmed it would not hold it, citing the environment, pets and wildlife. We found no later announcement of one.
Prague has had most of its bans in its decree since 2020, according to a Czech law firm's summary, and in September 2026 it went further. Expats.cz reports that 35 of its 57 districts now ban private fireworks all year, including on New Year's Eve. The other 22 allow them from 17:00 on 31 December to 02:00.
Budapest got there in December 2025: 20:00 to 02:00, outside protected zones. You can read Budapest's 2025 fireworks rules and zones in full.
Enforcement looks similar too. On New Year's Eve 2025 Prague police fined nearly 40 people, mostly foreigners, in historic areas. In Budapest, police figures reported by Telex show six on-the-spot fines, seven misdemeanour complaints and 36 cases under the city and District V decrees. Those are counts of police action, not of rule-breaking. The fines themselves differ: up to 10,000 crowns on the spot in Prague, as reported for 2024, and 200,000 to 1,200,000 forint under Budapest's decree, according to its police.
The crowd: Prague has numbers, Budapest doesn't
Radio Prague reported close to 100,000 foreign visitors on the night into 2025. That night police closed Smetanovo nábřeží, the embankment by Charles Bridge, at about 23:15 as a precaution, and hotel occupancy beat pre-Covid 2019. Visit Czechia reports hotel occupancy peaking at 86% in December 2025.
We found no matching count for Budapest, so we won't compare them. The closest figure is monthly: the Budapest Business Journal reported international arrivals 14% higher in Budapest in December 2025 than a year earlier.
Weather does not decide it
On Wikipedia's 1991 to 2020 tables, Prague's December averages run 1.3 °C warmer by day and 2.0 °C warmer by night, and it is drier, with 22.6 mm of precipitation against 38.5 mm. But Prague's station is in the dense centre and Budapest's is in a suburb, so part of that gap is the station. We found no figure for 31 December itself.
If Budapest wins
We only know one side of this from the inside. Most of our direct bookings come from visitors: 98.8% of 2,153 direct bookings from January 2024 to June 2026 came from abroad, led by the UK, the US, Germany, France and Australia. And the median direct booking over that period is made on the day, though that figure covers the whole year and not this night.
On the 31st, spend the day at the markets, which open at 11:00, and finish well before evening. We meet at 19:00 at Oktogon, two hours ahead of our usual 21:00. The crawl that ends at Instant-Fogas starts with welcome champagne, and the last stop's party ticket is included, worth €50. If you are staying a few days, there is also the regular guided crawl on your other nights in Budapest.
