Tavern
A tavern is a licensed establishment where alcoholic drinks are sold and consumed on the premises, typically also offering food. Historically, many taverns also provided accommodation for travellers, distinguishing them from simple alehouses.
Tavern vs pub vs ruin bar
The words tavern, pub, bar and inn overlap considerably. In modern British usage 'pub' is most common; 'tavern' carries a historical or rustic connotation. Budapest's ruin bars share the tavern's communal, informal character but are a distinctly 21st-century form built around repurposed derelict buildings.
