Inn

An inn is a traditional public house that provides food, alcoholic drink, and overnight lodging for travellers. The term predates the modern hotel and pub, and historically inns served as key staging posts along major roads.

Inn versus pub

In modern usage 'inn' and 'pub' overlap, but an inn traditionally implied accommodation alongside drink and food. Pubs (public houses) evolved as drink-focused neighbourhood establishments that did not always offer rooms. Many British and European establishments retain the word 'inn' in their name as a marker of heritage, even when the sleeping rooms have been removed.
