Cinco de Mayo

Cinco de Mayo, Spanish for 'fifth of May', marks the date in 1862 when the Mexican army defeated French forces at the Battle of Puebla against the odds. Although not Mexico's independence day, it has grown into a popular cultural and festive celebration worldwide.

How it is celebrated

Outside Mexico, Cinco de Mayo is most enthusiastically observed in the United States and in tourist-facing bars worldwide. It is marked with Mexican food, margaritas, tequila shots, and festive parties. Budapest bars and pub crawl operators often run themed Cinco de Mayo nights on or around 5 May.
