Distilled beverage
A distilled beverage (also called a spirit or liquor) is an alcoholic drink made by distilling a fermented base — grain, fruit or sugar — to concentrate the alcohol. Common examples include vodka, whisky, rum, gin and the Hungarian fruit brandy pálinka.
How distillation works
Distillation heats a fermented liquid so that ethanol — which boils at a lower temperature than water — vaporises first, then condenses back into a liquid with a higher alcohol by volume (ABV). Most spirits range from 37.5 % to 60 % ABV.
