Hungarian language
Hungarian (Magyar) is a Uralic language spoken by approximately 13 million people, chiefly in Hungary and by communities across Central Europe. It is notable for its agglutinative grammar and extensive use of suffixes.
A language unlike its neighbours
Unlike the surrounding Slavic, Germanic, and Romance languages, Hungarian belongs to the Finno-Ugric branch of the Uralic family, most closely related to Finnish and Estonian. Its 44-letter alphabet includes accented vowels such as ő and ű. Visitors to Budapest encounter it on menus, street signs, and in the names of ruin bars — romkocsma being a prime example.
